Training Information and Course Details

Any Practitioner wishing to attend an LSCP courses must register with the LSCP Booking system within the website. Individuals can then book themselves directly onto courses. 

HOWEVER – PLEASE NOTE. LSCP COURSES BOOKINGS WILL BE MANAGED BY THE LSCP TEAM.

We offer multi agency training therefore we ensure that no more than four people from each agency will be permitted to book onto each session. (LSCP reserves the right to monitor and withdraw bookings if required, to ensure that the audience remains multi agency).

BASIC INTRODUCTION TO SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN IN LIVERPOOL (This is NOT a refresher course)

This is available to Designated Safeguarding Leads and Workforce Development Leads who already have extensive experience of Safeguarding children and families in Liverpool. Issued as a stand alone PowerPoint and resources with trainer notes for use within your own organisation.

NB: this can only be used with the express consent and permission of the LSCP Training Officer and must not be changed or adapted - each year identified staff will receive an updated version to reflect the current learning and activity within Liverpool.

Course Aims: To provide staff with a basic understanding of Liverpool Safeguarding Children and Young people procedures giving workers an introduction to issues of recognition of the different categories of child abuse. It is therefore not appropriate for workers who have substantial experience of working in the child protection system.

CHECK WITH YOUR OWN AGENCY AS THEY MAY WELL OFFER THIS OR HAVE A SIMILAR COURES YOU CAN ATTEND. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR DESIGNATED SAFEGUARDING LEAD AND/OR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT LEAD.

 

UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF THE NEW DESIGNATED SAFEGUARDING OFFICER (Suitable for those who are NEW to the role)

This is a one day FACE TO FACE course designed to support staff in multi-agency settings who are new to the role and responsibilities of a Designated Safeguarding Coordinator.

All agencies working with children, young people and their families have a statutory Safeguarding responsibility and as such should identify a designated professional for safeguarding to support duties and responsibilities outlined under Section 11 of the Children Act 2004.

This course aims to enable those within the role of Agency Designated Safeguarding Lead to appropriately understand and fulfil their safeguarding responsibilities and covers;

  • Understanding the role, responsibilities and expectations of a Designated Safeguarding Officer within an agency or organisation.
  • Develop an understanding of current legislation and the safeguarding requirements for agencies and organisations.
  • Become familiar with the LSCP Levels of Need Framework and Responding to Need Guidance.
  • To build confidence in developing safeguarding policies and procedures supporting the safeguarding of all children and young people who come into contact with their organisation / service.
  • Have an understanding of 'good practice' when working towards building and maintaining safer organisations.

THIS IS NOT A REFRESHER AND IS ONLY SUITABLE FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO THE ROLE AND HAVE NO EXPERIENCE OF WORKING IN THIS ROLE.

ENGAGING EFFECTIVELY WITH RESISTANCE

This full day FACE TO FACE course aims to raise attendees awareness and explore ways of overcoming, the obstacles that prevent effective engagement with non-compliant families. The sessions covers;

  • Identifying what is an ideal, compliant, resistant and highly resistant family
  • Helps you to recognise the characteristics, circumstances and factors which influence family behaviour
  • Identifies the barriers to effective working and the strategies to overcome these obstacles
  • Identifies a range of skills needed to engage effectively with families
  • Enables discussion regarding policies and procedures and how to utilise these in practice

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE – An Awareness Session (VIRTUAL)

This 2 hour VIRTUAL session will provide attendees with a basic knowledge of domestic violence and abuse.

Attendees will develop an understanding as to the importance of their role in referring or signposting victims to appropriate and relevant support agencies and to work within the guidelines of safeguarding adults and children.

The session will enable attendees to develop understanding of the effects of abuse on all victims including women and children and of   'what to do' if they are concerned for the welfare of a client, child or young person.

IMPACT OF DOMESTIC ABUSE ON CHILDREN PRE BIRTH TO 11 YEAR OLDS (Suitable for those who are working with children in this age group)

This half day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM based session will;

  • Explore the impact of domestic abuse and on babies and children.
  • Look at how and why perpetrators use sabotage, pregnancy promoting behaviours and forced terminations to further their power and control.
  • Examine the short and long term impact and effects of abuse, violence and trauma on:
    • a foetus
    • 5 stages of child development (including emotional brain development)
    • pre-school children (0-5 yrs)
    • primary school age children (5-11 yrs)
  • Go through the importance of multi-agency working / Liverpool safeguarding process

CHILD ON PARENT DOMESTIC ABUSE  

This Half day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM based training is for professionals working with families where the child / adolescent is abusive and controlling towards parents & Managers responsible for Family Support services. The session covers;

  • Defining & identifying this type of abuse
  • Explore similarities and differences between intimate partner abuse and child to parent abuse
  • Case studies to explore pathways and contributory factors that lead to this type of abuse
  • Challenges in responding to child to parent abuse
  • Positive, effective and Good practice approach to working with families
  • Provides examples of programmes in the UK

IMPACT OF DOMESTIC ABUSE ON CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 11-18 yrs (Suitable for those who are working with young people in this age group)

This half day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM based session will identify ways in which teenagers are affected by domestic abuse. The session will;

  • Examine the messages teenagers get about relationships. (From whom? From where? What are the messages?)
  • Explore the impact and effects of abuse on teenagers (physically, emotionally, socially, sexually, financially, mentally).
  • Look at social media, technology and abuse.
  • Identify the barriers to speaking out and seeking support.
  • Emphasis and explain the importance of multi-agency working / Liverpool Safeguarding process.

RESPONDING TO CONCERNS ABOUT SELF HARM

This half day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM based session will explores aspects self-harm in children and young people.

Attendees will develop an understanding as to why young people self-harm and importance of offering early help and support to young people engaging in this behaviour.

CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION – Awareness

This half day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM based session will;

  • Provide an understanding of the definition of Child Sexual Exploitation
  • Raise awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation. 
  • Increase participants awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation as a form of Sexual Abuse.
  • Help you to recognise some indicators of exploitation including sexual exploitation in children and young people
  • Support you to be able to recognise children and young people who may be being targeted or at risk of being targeted by a perpetrator
  • Explain what grooming looks like and the psychological impact it can have
  • Be clear on how, when and why to share information
  • Explain Liverpool policy & procedures around Child Sexual Exploitation.
  • Advise where to access advice & support.

CHILD CRIMINAL EXPLOITATION - Awareness

Course Aims: This half day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM BASED session aimed at;

  • Raising Awareness of Child Criminal Exploitation.
  • Explains the definitions of both Child Criminal Exploitation and Trafficking.
  • Helps to recognise typical indicators of exploitation in children and young people.
  • Provides an understanding of the vulnerabilities that lead to Child Exploitation and be able to identify Children and Young People who may be at Risk.
  • Enables you to be aware of the impact of Child Exploitation.
  • Explains the local protocols and procedures for sharing information. (Be clear on how, when and why to share information.)
  • Provides opportunity to discuss ways in which to communicate and engage with vulnerable young people.

HARMUL PRACTICES INCLUDING (Forced Marriage, So called ‘Honour’ Based Violence) and Female Genital Mutilation)

This ONE day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM BASED aimed at raising the knowledge and awareness of staff working in key services and agencies in Merseyside to enable them to respond sensitively and appropriately to situations involving harmful practices

WORKING TOGETHER – A Shared Responsibility

This is a full day FACE TO FACE CLASSROOM based course for professionals who work regularly with children, young people and their families. Participants must have completed some Safeguarding Awareness training BEFORE booking onto this course.  This training focuses on the processes, principals and dilemmas of working together effectively to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and provides; 

  • Opportunity to develop a historical understanding of ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’.
  • Provides a greater understanding the safeguarding roles of parents and carers and recognise factors that can impact upon parenting.
  • Helps to develop an awareness of ‘roles and responsibilities’ in other agencies, understanding that each share ‘common responsibilities’.
  • Will consolidate knowledge and understanding of statutory legislations.
  • Enable an understanding of how to share information efficiently and effectively.
  • Explore how to record information effectively and the importance of effective record keeping in all: assessment, planning, intervention and review including the use of language.
  • Examines the purpose of 'Serious Case Reviews', the process and themes emerging from them.

These sessions will remain as face to face classroom based training 2021 onwards.

SERIOUS - Suicide Prevention for children and Young People

A half day FACE TO FACE CLASSOOM based training session.

Although a young person may have indicated to you that they want to end their life, most of the time this is not because they want to die, but rather because they want the painful emotions they are experiencing to stop.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Local Authority Designated Officer - LADO 

This 2 hour VIRTUAL training session will provide staff with;

  • an awareness of local procedures for managing allegations against adults who work with or on behalf of children and young people.
  • Help them to understand the roles & responsibilities of key persons involved in the LADO process.
  • Explain how the process supports the development of a safer workforce.
  • Provide explanation of and provides greater understanding for the implications of implementing this statutory guidance within their organisation.
  • Gives an opportunity to explore the updates within the latest Education Guidance 2020 - Keeping Children Safe in Education

SPOTLIGHT ON…….. Sessions Spotlight sessions are Sixty Minute multi-agency briefings. Each one has a different focus and all are co facilitated by LSCP Training Coordinator along with colleagues from across the LSCP Partnership. Practitioner Guidance notes are developed to support each one. Please check the booking system for confirmation of dates.
