Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP2) - Virtual Training
Child Neglect is the most prevalent form of child maltreatment in the UK and is the most common reason for a child to be subject to a child protection plan nationally. Neglect is also a feature in 60% of Serious Case Reviews.
Assessing and Measuring Neglect can be difficult, it can be subjective and prone to bias. Neglect can be complex and is sometimes intergenerational. It is also difficult to capture and compare.
The Graded Care Profile (GCP version 2) is a practical tool which supports practitioners in measuring the quality of care delivered to an individual child from an individual carer or carers over a short window of time, and is designed to give a representative overview of the current level of care. The grades are based on observations and good quality evidence gathered during this window.
How can The Graded Care Profile (2) Tool help practitioners?
The tool is called Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP 2) because different aspects of family life are "graded" on a scale of 1-5. Questions are broken down into 4 areas:
- Physical, such as quality of food, clothes and health
- Safety, such as how safe the home is and if the child knows about things like road safety
- Emotional, such as the relationship between carer and child
- Developmental, such as if a child is encouraged to learn and if they are praised for doing something good.
The GCP 2 supports practitioners to work with parents to highlight strengths and weaknesses and also to identify what needs to be changed.
By working out what parents can do better, it's easier for the person working with the family to get them the right support to improve the life of their child.
